Nothing Special? 12th Man | Mohanlal | Review by Guru

The Mohanlal-Jeethu Joseph duo is a team that Malayalam film lovers have high hopes for. The main reason for waiting for Twelfth Man is that the third film from the duo is expected to deliver a great cinematic experience, as Drishyam and Drishyam 2 have come before the duo. Also the canvas of this image prepared for the OTT platform is very small. The film tells the story of a single night. Ninety percent of that story takes place in a single location. Therefore, we have a very different story and characters in front of us. Written by newcomer Krishna Kumar, the film is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Ashirvad Cinemas.

A twelfth man accidentally enters to a Get Together, which is planned at a private resort, along with seven college friends, their life partners and one of whom is about to get married. The film manages to capture the essence of an investigation / mystery thriller, a totally unexpected death that takes place there later. Although the character of Chandrasekhar is played by Mohanlal, the author manages to give each character in the film a precise position and purpose. A game they start with brings them to some revelation they never expected, from one group saying that no one can fully understand one another.
The director Jeethu Joseph's excellence is the biggest positive of this film. The way in which the story, which is confined to one place, is presented to the audience without being boring till the last moment is commendable. The first half an hour is the time it takes for the audience to understand the characters, the personal relationships between them and their current status. But after that, the film continues to be very thrilling. It is very interesting that the character of Mohanlal, Chandrasekhar, understands the truths hidden inside each of the characters and the lies they tell. At the same time, the dialogues and the twists and turns in the story make the film more interesting. The film manages to present both mystery and excitement to the audience.
Another highlight of the film is Mohanlal's stellar performance as Chandrasekhar. His performance as an alcoholic bully in the first hour is a very energetic and entertaining performance, but his performance becomes more subtle and intense as the character's mood and mood of the film change. Mohanlal, who strictly follows the body language of his character, also gets a handshake through dialogue delivery. Apart from Mohanlal, Unni Mukundan, Saiju Kurup, Sivada, Anushree, Priyanka Nair, Anu Sithara, Leona Lishoi, Rahul Madhav, Aditi Ravi, Anu Mohan, Chandu Nath, Nandu and Pradeep Chandran also performed well. The performances of Saiju Kurup, Leona Lishoi, Sivada and Chandunath are noteworthy.
The technical quality is another plus point of this film. The visuals by Satish Kurup and the editing by VS Vinayak are superb. The transition from one scene to another was magnificent. The completeness of those transition shots is able to give the viewer the feeling that they are with him wherever the story takes place and where the flashback comes from. The background music by Anil Johnson is also excellent. Twelfth Man is not a film without negatives. One of them is about two and a half hours long. The film would have been more thrilling if the time taken to convey the context of the story and the condition of the characters to the audience had been reduced a little. Similarly, the dramatic nature of the dialogues of some of the characters sometimes turned to stone. Even though the storytelling style and presentation style of the film is new in Malayalam, it is not a big novelty for those who watch a lot of Hollywood thrillers.
However, without boring the audience, Jeethu Joseph was able to tell the story in a fun and thrilling way from the beginning to the end. One after the other twists and turns, Mohanlal's excellent performance as well as his highly technical making make 12th Man a great cinematic experience. Not only did the Mohanlal-Jeethu Joseph team live up to expectations, but this is the third consecutive victory that this killer combination has achieved.
