Did Aamir Khan Disappoint?; Lal Singh Chadha Review
Anyone who is depressed and broken in life just needs to watch Tom Hanks' 'Forrest Gump' to recharge. If the same film is transplanted to the Indian scenario, how successful will it be? 'Lalsingh Chadha' starring Aamir Khan is a remake prepared by director Advait Chandan and screenwriter Atul Kulkarni by doing maximum justice to the first film. But the lack of energy felt throughout the three-hour-long film is likely to leave the audience feeling stoned. If you watch the movie without thinking about the fact that it is a remake of Forrest Gump, you will probably like the movie to some extent.
Actor Atul Kulkarni, who has acted in many Malayalam films, has rewritten 'Forrest Gump' into Hindi. The film is about Aamir Khan's journey from his childhood during the Emergency to the Ayodhya Rath Yatra, the Mumbai riots and the Mumbai Taj attack through the Lokpal struggle. Atul Kulkarni has successfully transplanted Forrest Gump to the Indian context by portraying the contemporary political situation in a Western style.
Aamir is in the role of Lalsingh, a native of Pathankot. Aamir's efforts to become the character of Lal by growing his beard and gaining weight are commendable. However, the disappointment felt by the common audience in Aamir Khan's performance is that he follows the shadow of 'PK' in many places.
The major flaw in the screenplay of the film is that Forrest Gump's mother becomes a normal mother in the Indian context. There is the concern of a mother who tries to save her son during the riots of the eighties and nineties. But in life Lal does not become a mother who gives him energy. But Mona Singh's performance as the mother is superb.
From Forrest Gump's 'Jenny' to Lal Singh's Rupa D'Souza, Kareena Kapoor captivates the audience with her simple acting style. The audience will love Rupa, who gets nowhere but gets ready to become the heroine of Bollywood that Dawood Abraham wanted in the 90s.
The presence of Naga Chaitanya who comes as Bala's friend is the backbone of the film. Bala has been portrayed as a stereotypical Tamil character in Hindi films. But Naga Chaitanya will win applause from the audience with his performance.
Lieutenant Dan in Forest Gump replaces as Mohammed, the terrorist whom Lal rescues during the Kargil War. While Mohammad remains an incredible story line, Manav Vij is gaining attention with his superb acting.
Shah Rukh Khan has come with a guest appearance in Lal Singh which shocked the audience. It's a wonder if Shah Rukh becoming a teenager doesn't thrill. Kareena, Naga Chaitanya, Manavi Vij and Mona's impressive performances are undoubtedly the backbone of the film. Shahrukh's cameo appearance is a bonus.
Many moments, including Lal receiving the medal from KR Narayanan, will remain indelible in the mind. Lal's run through Munnar, Changanassery and Kanyakumari will keep the Malayalis attached to the film. But this is not what determines the fate of any film. In my opinion, I give 3/5 for this film.
